In the August 2002 newsletter, then President, Steve Richey, had these words
to say about the magic of a submarine crew reunion. All who have never attended a reunion should take this aboard.
His words are very appropriate and quite meaningful!
"An amazing thing occurs at
all of our reunions. Sub sailors who haven't seen their friends and shipmates in thirty years, stop, study
each others faces, until recognition flashes into their minds (or they read the name-tags), and smile the biggest of smiles.
Memories and events begin to flood into their minds and they quickly begin to reminisce. Others, perhaps from a
different crew or different time, who have never met some of their fellow John C. Calhoun veterans, smile, shake hands, and
enjoy a camaraderie few other service or civilian men have ever known.
I don't understand
how this magic works. But, if I had to guess, I would give much credit to mutual trust and mutual respect. Each
shipmate knows of what the other is capable. Each knows the training and studying their shipmates have completed.
Each knows wha tthe other has been through; the trials of a long, arduous period at sea and the concerns about their wives
and children ashore.
Whatever it is, it has been "ever present" during each of our past reunions."
